Online trading scam tips for P2P buyers and sellers

These are common scam patterns seen in online trading in Malaysia and how to spot them. They are general descriptions, not accounts of any specific case. They help whether or not you use escrow.

Five common patterns: pay-first-no-delivery, fake support, fake transfer screenshots, fake middlemen, phishing bots.

1. Fake authorities by phone

Callers claim to be police, a bank, a court, the tax authority or a courier and say your account is linked to crime, urging you to move money to a "safe account". Real agencies do not ask for this, do not tell you to keep it secret, and do not ask for OTPs. Hang up and call back using an official number you look up yourself.

2. Fake buyers and sellers who move you off-platform

On Facebook Marketplace, Carousell or Shopee someone quickly asks you to continue on WhatsApp or Telegram, then wants a deposit or sends a "payment link". Red flags: price far below market, refusal to video-call, pressure to pay now. Keep deals inside the platform, or use escrow or a face-to-face check.

3. Fake payment proof

A buyer sends a "transfer done" screenshot or a "pending" message and asks you to ship. Screenshots are easy to fake. Trust only the credit in your own account.

4. Phishing links

Messages about parcels, frozen accounts or unpaid fines contain links that ask for banking logins and OTPs. Do not click; open your bank app yourself. Never share an OTP.

5. Task and "like-and-earn" jobs

You earn small amounts at first, then you are asked to "advance" larger sums, and the money never comes back. No genuine job asks you to pay first.

6. Investment and romance scams

Someone you met online guides you into a "platform". A small withdrawal works, you invest more, then you are told to pay "tax" or a "fee" to withdraw. Any demand to pay before you can withdraw is more of the same scam.

7. Fake support and fake middlemen

Someone private-messages you after you ask a question in a group, claiming to be support, an admin or a guarantor. Real services do not ask for transfers by private message. Check every character of a username, and enter our bot only through the button on this site or by the exact username jianghudanbao_bot.

8. Deposit scams for rentals and tickets

Stolen photos, a low price, and a deposit before viewing or before receiving a verifiable ticket. See the item first; never pay a private account for something you cannot check.

What escrow helps with, and what it does not

Escrow solves "who pays first". It cannot stop you from visiting a phishing site, cannot prove goods are genuine, and cannot recover money already sent out of the platform. If anyone asks you to leave escrow and pay privately, treat it as the strongest warning sign.

If you have been scammed

  1. Contact your bank immediately and ask them to freeze or intercept the transfer.
  2. Call 997, Malaysia's National Scam Response Centre, which was set up jointly by the police, Bank Negara, MCMC and financial institutions. Speed matters. Check the official channel for current operating hours.
  3. Make a police report.
  4. You can check suspicious bank accounts, phone numbers and company names against reports in PDRM Semak Mule. Not finding a match does not mean the account is safe.

Inside the Dama Jianghu group, the group bot also lets members check an account and submit a screenshot-backed report, which a moderator reviews before it is posted. A report is not a substitute for a police report and does not promise a refund.

FAQ

Someone is pressuring me to pay right now. What should I do?

Stop. A legitimate deal does not collapse if you take a few minutes to check.

A buyer sent proof of transfer. May I ship?

No. Only a credit in your own account counts.

What is the first thing to do after a scam?

Contact your bank, then call 997 and report to the police.

Can escrow stop all scams?

No. It only covers who pays first and where the money waits.
